Stardate
20020930.1900 (On Screen): The "seized weapons grade uranium" turned out to be a mixture of zinc, iron, zirconium and manganese. It's anybody's guess where they got it or what it was originally intended for, but it had nothing whatever to do with nuclear weapons. I think maybe the police intercepted someone who was attempting to defraud those out there with more money than brains who are seeking U-235. I gather that quite a lot of this has happened, and that militant fools in various third world nations have actually wasted many millions of dollars purchasing depleted uranium or, as in this case, things which are not even radioactive at all, in hopes of making their own nuclear weapons. It would indeed be interesting to know who it was they were going to try to meet and defraud, but since they were released and have now vanished, we may never know.
By the way, it seems that the original report of 15.75 kilograms included the lead container. It's quite apparent now that someone got just the tiniest bit overeager in making press releases. I suspect whoever it was will soon be looking for alternate employment.
