20020623.2134 (On Screen): Israel has moved forces in and surrounded Arafat's headquarters.
Again. What is this, the fourth time? The fifth? I've lost count.
The first time it sent a message: we can come get you if we really want. The second time it said, "We are not cowed by world opinion, and we still can come get you if we want."
The third time, however, it said, "Actually, this is just a gesture; we're too gutless to do anything except make demonstrations." That one was a major mistake.
Having done it twice without actually killing or capturing Arafat himself, if they did it a third time it should have been for real. Now the Palestinians know that it's an empty threat. And what will the Israelis do this time? Will they follow through, or will this be more empty posturing?
Update: "Government officials were also examining the legality of expelling families of suicide bombers from the West Bank. One suggestion was that they could be taken to the Gaza Strip, which has more secure borders with Israel." Maybe they are going to get serious this time.
