Stardate
20020623.1231 (On Screen): We remember firsts: first man on the moon, first man to the top of Everest. People are driven to do what no-one has ever done before. But is there any reason to respect someone for being the first to do something no-one in their right mind would want to do, something which has no permanent result at all short of getting a footnote in a record book somewhere? What's the glory in being the first person to cross Wyoming on a pogo stick?
First non-stop flight over the Atlantic? That was worthy of praise. It was not only dangerous and difficult, it was worthwhile. It blazed the trail, it showed that it could be done. Millions of people have flown over the Atlantic since then.
But who cares about someone being the first to cross the Atlantic on a Jet Ski? What's the point?
