20020520.1531 (On Screen): It seems that Cyprus has not agreed to keep the thirteenth Palestinian terrorist. The twelve whose fates have been decided will be picked up tomorrow by a Spanish plane and delivered to their new homes where, one presumes, the red carpet will be rolled out for these honored guests and they'll be treated like new puppies. (They're so cute and lovable...)
The thirteenth will remain in Cyprus until they figure out what is to become of him. There have been several reports of his fate where diplomats announced that someone else's nation was going to get stuck with him, only to have the potential stuckee immediately deny it. He was going to go to Finland; then he was going to go to Belgium. Then he was going to stay in Cyprus. Now they've admitted they don't yet know where he's going.
Cyprus says he isn't staying there, but what if no-one else accepts him? "Temporary" might become "permanent". It still looks suspiciously like Cyprus is going to get the shaft.
Perhaps the easiest solution would be extremely rapid sub-cranial administration of 4 grams of lead.
Update 20020521: "Our new countries should have no fears. We are normal, civilised people," said Abdullah Daoud, who was Yasser Arafat's intelligence chief in Bethlehem.
Update: This deal is looking less and less impressive by the moment. In order to get consensus, a lot of loose ends seem to have been embodied in the agreement. Here's a new one: seems that the terrorists will only be given visas for 12 months. It's not at all clear yet what will become of them after that.
