20020327.0902 (On Screen): A black activist has filed a broad lawsuit against every corporation she can find which has any roots (ahem) in any business which profited from the slave trade 200 years ago.
It's a shakedown, plain and simple. Her suit has no merit. It's not obvious she even has standing to file, let alone whether any tort still exists after such a long time. But that's not the real point; she's trying to embarrass the companies into settling to avoid negative publicity.
I'd love to see at least one of the companies counter-sue, but I don't expect it to happen. Some will pay her off; others will work to get the lawsuit dismissed with minimum fuss and publicity. And the cult of victimhood will get yet more encouragement in Black America, to their long term disservice.
Update: Iain discusses this.
