USS Clueless - Arafat's ceasefire

Stardate 20020328.1318

(On Screen): Suddenly Arafat has decided he's ready for a cease fire. Or so he says.

Actually, what he's ready to do is to try to head off the massive Israeli military retaliation he sees coming in the wake of one of the most devastating terrorist attacks against Israel in history.

"Unfortunately, there are some aggressive preparations by the Israelis to do a wide military operation against our civilians, our cities and our refugee camps that is targeting mainly the peace process and peace initiative declared in the Arab summit and targeting our people and our Palestinian Authority."

The sheer cynicism of the timing of this is beyond belief.

You know, if he really cared about those things, he could have tried to stop the terrorist attacks himself and not given the Israelis any reason for such action. But Israel won't be targeting the non-existent "peace process"; they'll be targeting the people who have been attacking them. They're just about one step from full-scale war, and at this point I hardly blame them.

Why is Arafat still being permitted to keep breathing?

Update: Hundreds of people from Europe and America have gone to the West Bank to stay with Palestinian families and to make themselves into human shields. If a bunch of them die, I won't have any sympathy for them at all.

Update: Arafat is rounding up the usual suspects. But the guy who made that attack yesterday was released a few days before from Palestinian custody, apparently to permit him to make the attack.

Update: I'm not the only one who is fed up. Check out Suman Palit's take on it.
