Stardate 20011017.1314 (On Screen): Even as Motorola's chip business

continues its implosion, IBM is juicing its own PPC line and has now announced that it will soon have a version of PPC which not only runs 1 GHz (at last!) but also consumes extremely little power. Which presents Apple with an interesting dilemma: if they offer Macs running these chips, they'll have a higher clock rate, but since they won't support Altivec, they'll run Steve Jobs' legendary carefully selected Photoshop filters slower, leaving Apple with a computer which can't actually beat the fastest PCs in
any important benchmark, even a rigged one. What to do, what to do?
