Stardate 20011010.2130 (On Screen): Next on the menu is hardened targets, like bunkers and tunnel systems. The weapon of choice is the
GBU-28. It's a rather remarkable bomb weighing 4400 pounds but having only 670 pounds of explosives (which is still quite a lot, but a much lower proportion than usual). Most of the rest is high quality steel. The first ones were, in fact, made out of surplus barrels from 8" bore artillery pieces. It's 14" wide and more than 12 feet long, and it's laser-guided. This report says that at least one has already been used. If I were to make a guess, I'd say it was dropped by an
F/A-18 Hornet, probably a D or an F (depending on what
Enterprise is carrying). Those are 2-man jets, so the guy-in-back (as he's known) can handle the targeting laser. It's capable of penetrating 20 feet of concrete or a hundred feet of soil. We have upwards of a hundred of them in stock, and more can be made relatively rapidly if need be.
