Stardate 20010801.1531 (On Screen): This article describes in pretty great detail how the marvelous new CD copy protection mechanism which is being sold by a company called Midbar Tech. Though they're keeping mum, it turns out be revealed in
patent #6208598. It's really pretty pathetic and there should be no difficulty at all defeating it. Is this all the better they can do?
They crow about the fact that they can stay one step ahead of the pirates. Actually, they can't. The reason is that deploying new countermeasures of this kind (such as changing the size and shape of the noise spike which is interjected) is a slow process, whereas changing the code which defeats it is rapid. A new countermeasure is deployed on new CDs which are distributed in physical form in huge quantities, whereas the crack will be software distributed on the internet. (discuss)
