DefCon are held in Las Vegas each year at the same time, and it's obvious that this was deliberate.
Blackhat is a convention for system managers to learn how to keep their computer systems safe from intrusions.
DefCon (nice name, that) is a convention for hackers to get together to talk about how to break into systems. (It's rumored that the FBI watches this one closely.) I think it is obvious that one of the started happening, and then the other was scheduled at the same time and place to deliberately coincide with it, but which came first? I honestly don't know. (I'd love to know who has the sense of humor.)
